Another Week, Another Future Grads Update!
We are at our final week of this Summer’s Future Grads internships, and our interns have learned a wide variety of skills, programs, and expertise. With host companies Meadow, Next Request, and the Architectural Foundation of San Francisco, see how these young professionals have been spending their Summer:
MEADOW
Aneka Yee, Caleb Kahookele, and Lenno Lara are interning at Meadow this Summer. Meadow is a startup that allows you to purchase medical cannabis delivered from local dispensaries. The students were largely drawn to this internship due to an interest in the intersection of tech and medicine. Aneka aspires to become a doctor, and since working with Meadow, she has become even more excited about her future due to the way so many policies are changing. Though they have only been working together for a few weeks, they all agree that they learned how to work together as a team quickly. This collaborative environment has improved their social skills and public speaking skills. Their supervisor, David Hua, said the interns are a positive and responsible group and he is appreciative of the insight that they bring to the team.
Next Request
Nigel Wilhelm is an incoming senior at Lowell High school and he’s spending his summer interning at Next Request. Next Request is a startup that facilitates the process of transferring records between the government and the public. Nigel is interested in pursuing a business degree in the future and his role as an intern has allowed him to explore this field further, as his duties are centered around reaching out to future clients to create new business for the company. His boss and mentor at Next Request, Reed Duecy-Gibbs, has enjoyed the Future Grads program and said that he believes that it is a fantastic way to connect with local communities and mentor students interested in the tech world.
Architectural Foundation of San Francisco
Tyler Yi, a student at Drew High School, and Krystal Powell, a student at Kipp San Francisco College Prep, are both rising juniors interning with the San Francisco Architectural Foundation this Summer. Although only two are featured, the Architectural Foundation has been the top recruiter for Future Grads interns every year so far, and never fails to teach students valuable skills needed in the architecture and planning world. Tyler and Krystal, along with all other Future Grads interns, have learned how to use software such as SketchUp and Revit, and recently completed a project simulating architectural changes to historic buildings in San Francisco. They’ve also gained insight into what general contractors do, how bidding works, and what building a site looks like in real-time due to guidance from their mentors. With Krystal’s aspirations of becoming an engineer and Tyler’s hope for a happy future, both interns expressed their gratitude for the insights they gained while interning with the Architectural Foundation of San Francisco.
