As one of San Francisco’s most iconic companies, Gap has long played a major role in shaping the city’s business, retail, technology, and ecommerce landscape. Sven brings more than 30 years of executive technology leadership experience across companies, including Mattel, AT&T Wireless, DIRECTV, Pearson, and Symantec, with deep expertise in AI, digital transformation, and enterprise innovation.

sf.citi Recap: SFMTA Tour — Building the Future of Transit in SF

sf.citi members joined San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) leadership for a behind-the-scenes briefing and facilities tour focused on transit funding, modernization, and downtown recovery. The discussion was led by Director of Transportation Julie Kirschbaum and senior SFMTA staff.

A key theme throughout the tour was the critical role transit plays in moving San Francisco’s workforce and supporting the city’s economic recovery.

SFMTA shared updated figures highlighting Muni’s importance to the regional economy:

• More than 500,000 riders use Muni every weekday.
• Roughly 270,000 commuters travel into San Francisco daily for work.
• Muni accounts for nearly 50% of all transit trips in the nine-county Bay Area.

SFMTA leadership emphasized that reliable transit is foundational to bringing workers and activity back downtown. The agency also outlined significant long-term funding challenges as pandemic-era support expires, including projected deficits of $307 million in FY26-27 and $344 million in FY27-28.

To stabilize service, SFMTA previewed two proposed November 2026 funding measures that could generate:

• Approximately $155 million annually for Muni through a regional transit measure.
• Approximately $150 million annually through a proposed local parcel tax measure.

The tour also highlighted SFMTA’s broader modernization and joint development strategy, using agency-owned sites to support housing, economic activity, and long-term transit revenue generation.
