STATE OFFICIALS PRIORITIZE SAFETY AS SCHOOLS REOPEN
Before the long-awaited reopening on Monday, San Francisco’s public school system faced a final obstacle as the surging delta variant disrupted its original safety plans. This forced education officials to act fast as they could not reverse course on reopening schools. The state took the first step by requiring students and educators to wear masks inside schools, but then this week, Governor Newsom further advanced school safety by making California the first state in the nation to require educators and school staff to receive the vaccine or face weekly testing.
Special shoutout to San Francisco residents age 12 to 17, who have the highest percentage of vaccination rate of any age group in the City at over 95 percent—maybe the kids are alright.
ASSESSOR-RECORDER JOAQUIN TORRES ON SAN FRANCISCO’S RECOVERY

sf.citi continued our 2021 Lunch and Learn discussion series with San Francisco Assessor-Recorder Joaquin Torres. We were joined by sf.citi members Airbnb, AT&T, Comcast, Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Salesforce, Twitter, Verizon, Zoox, and more.
Our conversation with Assessor-Recorder Torres focused heavily on San Francisco’s post-pandemic recovery process and how the City and businesses should navigate our uncertain future. With the uncertainty of the virus’s peaks and valleys, Assessor-Recorder Torres stressed the importance of capitalizing on this moment to leverage the digital tools to provide government services and reach residents. The hope being that the current environment pushes the City to more digitalization and investment in digital infrastructure because as he acknowledged, San Francisco needs to significantly improve its digital equity and services to levels expected from the tech capital of the world.
GET INVOLVED WITH CALIFORNIA WILDFIRE RELIEF EFFORTS
The Dixie Fire raging across Northern California became the second largest wildfire in California history, burning over 500,000 acres and destroying more than 1,000 structures. Aided by the unprecedented dry conditions, the fire’s reach and destruction became increasingly amplified and even led Cal Fire Director Thom Porter to describe the speed at which the fire burned through live timber as “unlike anything we’ve seen.” With the wildfire only 30 percent contained, thousands of residents and structures still remain in a highly vulnerable position. Learn how you can support those impacted by the Dixie Fire below.
