SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr and sf.citi Chairman Ron Conway today announced the 2nd annual Future Graduates Summer Tech Internship Program. As it did last year, sf.citi donated $25,000 to fund stipends for San Francisco student interns at sf.citi member tech companies: Pathbrite, Relevance, Black Girls Code, Sincerely, Cloudera, Stumbleupon, Unified Social, Appallicious, MsJones Design, Exygy, Nudge Technology, and Shasta Crystals Inc.
“Giving young people job opportunities is among my highest priorities and we are doing just that again this summer,” said San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee. “Future Graduates supports my San Francisco Summer Jobs+ Initiative, investing in our youth, giving them valuable job skills and preparing our next generation of leaders. The San Francisco Police Foundation partnership with sf.citi will give youth access to our city’s innovation sector where they will learn the skills they’ll need to compete for our 21st Century jobs.”
Twenty San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) high school students, ages 14-18 will participate in internships at eleven innovative San Francisco-based technology companies. The eight-week program begins June 21st, 2013 with an orientation. Each student will receive a $1,250 paid internship stipend funded by the $25,000 sf.citi grant.
“When we began this program, I told you the staggering statistics related to the importance of high school graduation. This summer internship program is part of the long term plan to keep our youth in school, help them graduate high school and live successful healthy lives.” said SF Police Chief Greg Suhr. “I want to thank sf.citi for helping put this program together, and thank everyone that helped make this year’s program a positive experience for our youth. It is something that we need to continue for years to come. I thank the private business partners and the other law enforcement agencies that made this program the wonderful success that it is. It is all about our kids…our future.”
“sf.citi is proud to again stand with Chief Suhr and our local technology community to provide cutting edge summer jobs for young San Franciscans in our local innovation economy.” said Ron Conway, Chair of sf.citi. “This program is exactly where city leaders and tech can come together to improve the lives of San Franciscans.”
“It’s been amazing. I’ve done a lot of cool stuff and had a lot of fun working on websites and learning about developing games, apps, and surveys. I am saving most of my stipend to save for college,” said Nely Rodriguez, intern at Giggo last summer, who’s dream is to attend Harvard or Berkeley and become a nurse or a teacher. “I definitely want to do this program again…it’s always been my dream to work during the summer and now that dream is accomplished.”
sf.citi member company Pathbrite will lead an orientation to help students track their internship progress throughout the summer using Pathbrite’s Portfolio Platform, a next generation academic and professional portfolio that helps educators and students improve the way they teach, learn and grow.
“Students today need to develop skills that will prepare them for the job market of the 21st Century. With internships hosted by some of the worlds most innovative companies, we’re not only helping kick start their careers, but also creating San Francisco’s workforce of the future,” said Heather Hiles, Founder and CEO of Pathbrite. “Pathbrite is committed to helping students showcase evidence of their skills and achievements in pursuit of their educational and employment goals.”
The Architectural Foundation of San Francisco, a non-profit educational organization for public school students through mentored appreciation of architecture, engineering, construction, and design will again host the program orientation and kick-off events.
“The Architectural Foundation of San Francisco is pleased to host the Future Graduates program orientation day,” said Alan Sandler, Executive Director of the Architectural Foundation of San Francisco. “We look forward to assisting these students with the knowledge and skills they need to graduate high school and pursue fulfilling careers.”
