I’m writing you today to provide you with a brief update on the City’s new district lines and what’s next for former D6 Supervisor Haney’s vacated seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. This week, former D6 Supervisor Matt Haney was officially sworn into the California State Assembly.
San Francisco Redistricting
After a tumultuous and fraught process, San Francisco has officially finalized its new district boundaries. Districts with the most notable changes include Districts 5 and 6, represented by Supervisor Dean Preston and former Supervisor Matt Haney.
Despite all that’s transpired, the SF Redistricting Task Force approved the final district maps on Thursday, April 28th. The newly outlined districts reflect the Tenderloin, a historically underserved neighborhood and recent subject of Mayor Breed’s latest declaration of emergency, now represented by Supervisor Dean Preston. Despite missing their initial deadline and subjecting themselves to a suit led by Todd David, SFHAC’s Executive Director, the SF Chronicle reported David’s desire to move forward with the lawsuit was “unlikely.”
While Districts 5 and 6 underwent the most drastic changes, all Districts’ boundaries were affected by population changes. For a more detailed account of boundary changes, please see here. sf.citi’s “SF Politics 101” maps will soon include the newest boundary lines. Updates are forthcoming.
District 6 Seat
Former D6 Supervisor Haney’s position on the SF Board of Supervisors is now vacant, leaving it open for a Mayoral appointment. While there is no set deadline for the Mayor to fill SFBOS vacancies as noted in the San Francisco City Charter, we expect the Mayor to announce his replacement any day now. The Mayor’s appointment will then be required to run for election in November 2022 if they want to remain D6 Supervisor.
While the Mayor has not indicated who she may appoint, several front runners have been identified by local media outlets. A few names floated for the appointment include Supervisor Haney’s current Chief of Staff, Honey Mahogany; former candidate for AD-17, Bilal Mahmood; Deputy Director at the ACLU, Vikrum Aiyer; strategic communications director at the San Francisco Police Department, Matt Dorsey; and President of the SF Planning Commission, Rachel Tanner.
Please let me know if you have any questions, and we will keep you apprised of the Mayor’s D6 appointment.
Thank you for your membership.
Jen
