sf.citi member companies,
I hope you are well this Spring morning.
As you know, at last week’s Board of Supervisors meeting, Supervisor Mar introduced a Public Health Emergency Leave Ordinance temporarily requiring private employers with 500 or more employees to provide emergency leave during the COVID-19 crisis. Thank you to those of you who worked with us last week to provide our recommended amendments to Mar’s office.
Yesterday, the duplicated legislation that focuses on leave specific to health care workers was heard and passed unanimously with the approval of several amendments listed below. Supervisor Safai expressed his support and thanked the Supervisor for addressing this issue in the public sector.
Amendments discussed:
- The creation of a new paid sick leave category, where individuals who are members of a vulnerable population will have access to this type of leave – this leave can be used by those who are not currently sick
- Applies to those who can’t work under the current health order
- The uses are narrower for providers to avoid the risk of staffing shortages
- Clarified the number of hours an employee is eligible
- Clarified payout sequencing for part-time workers
The full legislation will be heard for the final reading at next week’s Board of Supervisors meeting. Considering the broad support it has received, it is anticipated to pass, as the item needs a two-thirds vote or greater to supersede the Mayor’s veto powers.
As always, will keep you updated on what transpires next week and please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you for your continued membership.
Jen
