Dear sf.citi members –
At yesterday’s Board of Supervisors Full Board meeting, Supervisor Rafael Mandelman requested a hearing on the state of workers rights in the gig economy. The co-sponsors for the hearing included Supervisors Mar, Peskin, Fewer, Walton, Brown.
Supervisor Mandelman went on to say that “San Francisco is the epicenter of the global tech economy. Companies such as Uber, Lyft, Instacart, and Postmates are each relying on services of gig workers and bring new people to San Francisco who often times travel from outside cities to work in dense areas”. Supervisor Mandelman further tied his remarks to Dynamex, stating, “Gig economy employers have created an industry that maneuvers CA labor laws – no parental leave, no overtime, no healthcare, no minimum wage, denying collective bargaining rights…”. He also noted that the Uber/Lyft strike shed light on the prosperity these companies experience at the expense of workers who sometimes work multiple gig economy jobs to make ends meet, and stated, “many gig economy workers rely on food pantries and public health clinics”.
As Dynamex/AB5 will be heard at the Senate next month, Supervisor Mandelman called for “San Francisco [being] part of that conversation”. He later stated he was looking forward to discussing these issues at the hearing. This hearing is being supported by Jobs with Justice, National Domestic Workers Alliance, Gig Workers Rising, and the Teamsters (others not noted).
A hearing request of this nature once introduced is not subject to the 30-day rule. The hearing has been confirmed for next Friday, June 28th at Public Safety and Neighborhood Services. This committee is comprised of Supervisors Mandelman, Stefani, and Walton.
We will continue to keep you updated on this situation. Feel free to reach out for any further questions or thoughts.
Thank you for your continued membership.
Jen
