Good Afternoon sf.citi members,
I’m writing to provide you with yesterday’s San Francisco special election results. Voters were tasked with deciding whether to recall three members of the Board of Education and elect the next member of the State Assembly and San Francisco Assessor-Recorder.
SFUSD Board Recall
San Francisco voters overwhelming voted to recall embattled School Board President Gabriela López and members Alison Collins and Faauuga Moliga over failed leadership and other controversies during the pandemic. López, Collins, and Moliga will be replaced by mayoral appointments 10 days after the election is officially certified and approved by the Board of Supervisors. Appointed Board members are expected to take office in mid-March 2022. While Mayor Breed has not made appointment decisions, we expect political allies will be chosen. The Mayor’s appointments will finish out the commissioners’ term (ending in January 2023), and should they wish to keep their seats on the Board, they will need to run in the November 2022 general election.
Please find results as of 9:30am below:
-
- Alison Collins
- YES (78.54%)
- NO (21.46%)
- Gabriela López
- YES (74.89%)
- NO (25.11%)
- Faauuga Moliga
- Alison Collins
- YES (72.04%)
- NO (27.96%)
CA Assembly
San Francisco District 17 voted to replace David Chiu’s former seat on the CA Assembly, vacated after Mayor Breed appointed him City Attorney. San Francisco District 6 Supervisor Matt Haney won the majority of the votes, with former Supervisor David Campos closely behind. However, despite leading the race, Supervisor Haney failed to reach the 50+1 majority required to avoid another special election for the seat. As a result, Haney and Campos will now face each other again in an April 2022 runoff before the winner must turn around and run again in the June 7 statewide primary election and the November 8 statewide general election. Should Haney win, Mayor Breed will have the opportunity to fill his vacant seat on the Board of Supervisors, which will also be a chance to place another moderate voice among a very progressive-leaning group. Many will be eager to also run for this seat, and whoever Mayor Breed appoints will also have to run again in November.
Please find results as of 9:30am below:
- David Campos (35.47%)
- Matt Haney (37.37%)
- Bilal Mahmood (21.17%)
- Thea Selby (5.99%)
Office of Assessor-Recorder
Joaquín Torres ran unopposed to carry on as Assessor-Recorder for San Francisco, also after being appointed to the position by Mayor Breed last year.
- Joaquín Torres (99.94%)
As always, please let me know if you have any questions, and we will continue to keep you updated on anything new that transpires.
