Good afternoon sf.citi members,
I am writing to give a brief update on Supervisor Safai’s proposed Conditional Use Authorization Required for Employee Cafeterias within Office Space. With a total of six Planning Commissioners, the outcome of today’s hearing was a 3-3 de facto fail at the Commission. Commissioners Melgar, Moore, and Richards supported the proposal, while Commissioners Johnson, Hillis, and Koppel opposed.
With a total of 19 speakers during public comment, three speakers supported the legislation and 16 speakers opposed. Speakers included sf.citi, the SF Chamber, a member of UAW, and many employees and vendors from sf.citi member companies. sf.citi provided a compelling argument that Commissioner Johnson wholly agreed with – this legislation pits small business against larger companies by encouraging larger companies to provide publicly accessible eateries that create further competition in the space.
As you may know, this recommendation does not control whether the legislation can move forward to Committee and the Board of Supervisors. The Commission offered a continuance to allow Supervisor Safai to bring the proposal back to the Commission after a seventh member has been appointed, which Supervisor Safai declined. The legislation will now be heard at the Land Use and Transportation Committee (Peskin, Safai, Haney) at a date that is to be announced, though, both sponsors of the legislation – Supervisors Peskin and Safai – sit on the committee. Therefore, this legislation will be heard at the full board in the near future.
As always, thank you for your continued support. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or thoughts.
Jen
