Meet the New San Francisco Board of Supervisors

In January 2019, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors will seat six (relatively) new members – five by way of the November 2018 election and one appointed to fill Mayor Breed’s vacated Supervisor position. At sf.citi, we regularly connect our members with leaders in San Francisco politics, and thought it fitting to take a look closer look at the fresh faces on the Board.

This Board faces many difficult tasks ahead, including choosing a new Board President, working with Mayor Breed to keep the city running, and, of course, addressing the many challenges facing San Francisco. Moving into the year ahead, we at sf.citi look forward to collaborating with all Members of the Board, both seasoned and newly-sworn in.

Catherine Stefani

Catherine Stefani, District 2

Increase resources (foot patrols & security cameras) to stop car break-ins
Audit city spending to ensure effective homeless services and street cleaning
Help local merchants fill vacant storefronts

Interesting Fact: Hosted and produced “For the Record,” a television show about legal issues

Gordon Mar

Gordon Mar, District 4
Hometown: Sacramento, CA
Age: 56
Former Job: Executive Director of Jobs with Justice San Francisco

Standout Policy Priorities:

Develop a City College satellite campus in the Sunset
Create mobile outreach & behavioral health services for D4’s homeless population
Build workforce and family housing on public land owned by the city

Vallie Brown

Vallie Brown, District 5
Hometown: Utah
Age: 61
Former Job: Project Manager at San Francisco’s Office of Economic Workforce Development

Expand rental subsidies programs and strengthen legislation to protect renters
Build more navigation centers and experiment with “resting places” to house the homeless during the day
Clean and green our neighborhoods

Matt Haney

Matt Haney, District 6

Former Job: Commissioner on the San Francisco Board of Education

Build more navigation centers to address homelessness
Identify opportunity zones to build more affordable housing
Invest in more resources for community clean-up crews and double the number of public restrooms in D6

Interesting Fact: The only school board member to ever visit all 113 public K-12 schools in SF

Rafael Mandelman

Rafael Mandelman, District 8

Former Job: Deputy City Attorney for the City of Oakland and San Francisco City College Trustee

Expand the city’s conservatorship laws
Find innovative ways to fight homelessness (i.e. build a homeless psychiatric facility at General Hospital)
Increase foot patrols and property crime police units to protect our neighborhoods

Shamann Walton

Protect tenants and streamline affordable housing projects
Increase the number of navigation centers and run existing shelters with a similar model
Eliminate switchbacks on the T line and increase the efficiency of Muni lines running through D10

Interesting Fact: Earlier in his career, he taught students in the juvenile justice system through the Solano County Office of Education
